Franz Rezek (born January 1, 1847 in Divišov ( Bohemia ), † April 1, 1912 in Linz ) was an Austrian military bandmaster and composer .

Life

Franz Rezek was the son of a master blacksmith. He received musical training at the Prague Organ School from Cenek Vinař and Moritz Mildner (1812–1905), who was then teaching violin at the Prague Conservatory . In 1865 he came into the service of the music corps of Feldjäger Battalion No. 18; after five years he moved to the 20th Infantry Regiment. In 1874 Rezek got a position as a violinist at the Marienoper in Saint Petersburg . In 1876 he returned to the military music service, this time as a music sergeant in Infantry Regiment No. 9. Two years later he moved to the same position in Infantry Regiment No. 14 in Linz; there he first appeared as a soloist on violin, flugelhorn and zither under the military bandmasters Michael Zimmermann and Edmund Patzke . In 1882 he was promoted to Kapellmeister himself. With this regiment he was stationed in Bregenz and Bozen from 1901 to 1908, and again in Linz from 1908. He gained particular popularity through his military concerts - he expanded the orchestra so that it could even perform two appearances at the same time. He also worked as a music teacher at the military lower secondary school in Enns . In 1911 he retired from active service. Rezek died on April 1, 1912 in Linz; he is buried in the local Barbara cemetery.

In addition to his work as a military bandmaster, Rezek was also known as the music teacher of Archduke Johann Salvator , whom he taught for three years in the zither , flugelhorn and composition.

Works

Rezek composed over 300 works, mainly marches, dances, overtures and concert pieces. These were often only available in handwritten form in the music archive of Alpenjäger Regiment No. 7 as the successor regiment of Infantry Regiment No. 14. After the military bandmaster of this regiment, Max Damberger, retired from service in 1934, his successor Anton Dewanger distributed many pieces to the military musicians that he no longer needed; some works are now considered lost.

Among Rezek's compositions, the Lahousenmarsch and the Generalstabsmarsch achieved particular fame .
