Béni Egressy [ ˈbeːni ˈɛgrɛʃi ] (born April 21, 1814 in Sajókazinc (today to Kazincbarcika ) in the then Borsod county as Benjámin Galambos ; † July 17, 1851 in Pest ) was a Hungarian composer , librettist , translator and actor .

Life

Béni Egressy was born in 1814 as the younger brother of Gábor Egressy . Like his brother Gábor, he took the stage in 1834 and became a member of the National Theater in Pest in 1837 . During the revolution of 1848 he took part in the Hungarians' struggle for freedom and became a member of the Hungarian Home Guard ( Honvéd in Hungarian ). After the uprising was put down by the Habsburgs , he was given amnesty and returned to the stage.

Works

He was more important as a composer than as an actor. For example, he set the probably most famous poem by the Hungarian poet Mihály Vörösmarty , the Szózat , which later became the unofficial “second Hungarian national anthem” alongside Himnusz . His musical works are characterized by a wealth of lovely melodies and are very popular in Hungary. He is also known in Hungary as a librettist for the operas by Ferenc Erkel , e.g. B. Bánk bán .
