Gábor Egressy [ ˈgaːbor ˈɛgrɛʃi ] (* 1808 in Sajólászlófalva in what was then Borsod County ; † July 30, 1866 in Pest ) was a Hungarian actor .

Life

The exact date of birth of Gábor Egressy is not known, there are different information in the sources. After he had belonged to several traveling acting ensembles, he found a permanent job at the theater in Cluj- Napoca. He later completed his artistic training in Vienna and since 1837 was one of the most important actors in the newly opened Hungarian National Theater in Pest. He was characterized by well-rounded play, excellent facial expressions and pure performance in both the tragedy and the conversation piece and exerted a great influence on the development of the national theater. He brought Shakespeare's dramas to the Hungarian stage through translations. In the revolutionary storms of 1848 and 1849 he was sent to the lower Tisza region as government commissioner , but recalled because of excessive severity. He then returned to the stage, fled to the Ottoman Empire after the revolution was suppressed , but received permission to return unpunished in 1854.

Gábor Egressy's brother Béni Egressy was also active on the stage.
