- April 13 : The Royal Court Theater in Dresden , built by Gottfried Semper as a successor to the previous Morettian Court Theater , opens with Carl Maria von Weber's jubilee overture and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's drama Torquato Tasso .
- April 22nd : The Dommusikverein und Mozarteum is founded in Salzburg , the roots of today's Mozarteum and the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra .

- January 21 : World premiere of the comic opera Le Guittarero by Jacques Fromental Halévy at the Opéra-Comique in Paris
- February 11 : World premiere of the opera Adelia by Gaetano Donizetti at the Teatro Apollo in Rome
- March 6 : World premiere of the opera Les diamants de la couronne ( The Crown Diamonds ) by Daniel-François-Esprit Auber at the Opéra-Comique in Paris
- March 13 : The world premiere of the opera Il Proscritto by Otto Nicolai takes place at the Teatro alla Scala di Milano in Milan. The libretto is by Gaetano Rossi based on the literary model by Frédéric Soulié . Together with Siegfried Kapper, the composer will almost completely rework the opera over the next few years. In 1844 the new version was premiered under the title The Homecoming of the Exiled .
- June 28 : The romantic ballet Giselle is premiered at the Paris Opera in a choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot . The title role is danced by Carlotta Grisi . The music comes from Adolphe Adam .
- 4th October : World premiere of the opera l contadino d'Agliate by Temistocle Solera in Milan, Teatro alla Scala.
- October 26 : World premiere of the opera La main de fer ou Un mariage secret by Adolphe Adam in Paris, (Opéra-Comique)
- November 24th : The farce with singing Das Mädl aus der Vorstadt by Johann Nestroy has its world premiere at the Theater an der Wien near Vienna. The music comes from Adolf Müller senior . The piece ran successfully until 1862 .
- December 3rd : World premiere of the tragic opera Catarina Cornaro, Queen of Cyprus by Franz Lachner in Munich
- December 22nd : World premiere of the opera La rein de Chypre by Jacques Fromental Halévy in Paris
- December 26th : World premiere of the opera Maria Padilla by Gaetano Donizetti at the Teatro alla Scala di Milano in Milan
- December 31 : premiere of the opera Casanova by Albert Lortzing in the Leipzig City Theater
