Musical theater
- March 6 : At the Teatro Carcano in Milan which takes place premiere of the opera La sonnambula ( The Sleepwalker ) by Vincenzo Bellini . The libretto is by Felice Romani based on a ballet pantomime by Eugène Scribe and Jean-Pierre Aumer . The soprano Giuditta Pasta sings the title role. The opera becomes one of Bellini's greatest successes and is soon performed across Europe.
- March 7th : World premiere of the opera Le Morceau d'ensemble by Adolphe Adam in Paris
- April 20 : The world premiere of the opera Viva la Mamma by Gaetano Donizetti takes place at the Teatro Canobbiana in Milan. This is a reworking of the opera Le convenienze teatrali from 1827.
- 3rd May : World premiere of the opera Zampa by Ferdinand Hérold at the Opéra-Comique (Paris)
- May 30th : World premiere of the opera Francesca di Foix by Gaetano Donizetti at the Teatro San Carlo, Naples
- June 15 : World premiere of the opera Le Philtre (The Love Potion) by Daniel-François-Esprit Auber at the Opéra-Comique in Paris
- June 18th : World premiere of the opera La romanzesca e l'uomo nero by Gaetano Donizetti at the Teatro del Fondo, Naples. The libretto is now lost.
- June 21 : World premiere of the opera La neve by Luigi Ricci in Milan (Teatro Cannobiana)
- July 9 : World premiere of the opera Le Grand Prix ou Le Voyage à frais communs by Adolphe Adam at the Opéra-Comique in Paris
- August 11th : World premiere of the opera La lure de l'hermite by Michele Carafa at the Opéra-Comique, Paris
- September 28 : World premiere of the opera Die Amazone or The women and love victory by Peter Joseph von Lindpaintner in Stuttgart
- October 11 : World premiere of the opera Chiara di Rosemberg by Luigi Ricci in Milan (Teatro alla Scala)
- October 31st : World premiere of the comic opera La Marquise de Brinvilliers by François-Adrien Boieldieu in Paris (Opéra-Comique). The composers Auber, Batton, Berton, Blangini, Carafa, Cherubini, Hérold, Ferdinando Paër were also involved in the work.
- November 9 : World premiere of the opera The Virgin by Conradin Kreutzer in Prague
- November 21 : The opera Robert le diable ( Robert the Devil ) by Giacomo Meyerbeer premieres at the Paris Opéra . The opera with the libretto by Eugène Scribe and Germain Delavigne established the composer's fame in France. In the year of the premiere, the first parodies are performed on the Parisian stages.
- December 1st : World premiere of the opera Casimir ou Le Premier Tête-à-tête by Adolphe Adam at the Théâtre des Nouveautés in Paris
- December 26 : The world premiere of the opera Norma by Vincenzo Bellini at the Teatro alla Scala di Milano in Milan ends with a fiasco , despite the excellent cast with Giuditta Pasta , Giulia Grisi , Domenico Donzelli and Vincenzo Negrini.
