- March 11th : With the first re-performance of Johann Sebastian Bach's St. Matthew Passion after his death by the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin , Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy established a Bach renaissance in the 19th century.

Musical theater
- January 10 : The first performance of the opera La fiancée ( The bride ) from Daniel-François-Esprit Auber made at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. At the end of the year translated Louis Angely , the libretto by Eugène Scribe and staged the opera at the royal theater in Berlin.
- January 12th : World premiere of the opera Il paria by Gaetano Donizetti in Naples, Teatro San Carlo
- February 6 : World premiere of the opera Le Jeune Propriétaire et le vieux fermier by Adolphe Adam at the Théâtre des Nouveautés in Paris
- February 9 : World premiere of the opera Pierre et Catérine by Adolphe Adam at the Opéra-Comique in Paris
- February 14th : The opera La straniera ( The Stranger ) by Vincenzo Bellini has its world premiere at the Teatro alla Scala di Milano in Milan. The libretto was written by Felice Romani based on the novel L'Étrangère by Charles Victor Prévôt, Vicomte d'Arlincourt .
- February 26 : World premiere of the opera Il giovedì grasso by Gaetano Donizetti in Naples, Teatro del Fondo
- March 11th : Premiere of Nicola Vaccai's Saul opera in Naples. (composed in 1825 or 1826)
- May 16 : The world premiere of the opera Zaira by Vincenzo Bellini at the Teatro Ducale in Parma is a failure. Bellini therefore used larger parts of Zaira in other works, especially in the opera I Capuleti ei Montecchi from 1830 .
- May 20th : World premiere of the comic opera Les Deux Nuits by François-Adrien Boieldieu in Paris, (Opéra-Comique Ventadour)
- June 12 : First complete performance of the opera Agnes von Hohenstaufen by Gaspare Spontini in Berlin
- June 27 : World premiere of the opera Colombo by Luigi Ricci in Parma (Teatro ducale)
- July 6th : World premiere of the opera Il castello di Kenilworth by Gaetano Donizetti in Naples, Teatro San Carlo
- August 3 : The opera Guillaume Tell ( Wilhelm Tell ) by Gioachino Rossini is premiered at the Grand Opéra Paris . Rossini's last opera is also his only grand opéra . The text is by Etienne de Jouy and Hippolyte Bis based on the play of the same name by Friedrich Schiller .
- September 9 : World premiere of the opera L'orfanella di Ginevra by Luigi Ricci in Rome (Teatro Valle)
- September 26 : premiere of the opera Jenny by Michele Carafa at the Opéra-Comique, Paris
- October 3rd : Premiere of the song play Denise, The Girl from Montfermeuil by Conradin Kreutzer in the Kärntnertortheater Vienna. The work, which originally comprised five acts, is later revised and shortened to three acts.
- October 10 : World premiere of the revised version of the opera Alina (originally performed in 1828) by Gaetano Donizetti in Rome
- November 7th : World premiere of the comic opera Le Dilettante d'Avignon by Jacques Fromental Halévy at the Opéra-Comique in Paris
- December 12th : World premiere of the opera Le nozze di Lammermoor by Michele Carafa at Théâtre-Italien, Paris.
- December 22nd : World premieres of the opera Der Templer und die Jüdin by Heinrich Marschner at the Stadttheater in Leipzig and the song play Die Heimkehr aus der Fremde by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in the garden hall of the Mendelssohn family estate in Berlin
- December 26th : World premiere of the opera Il sonnambulo by Luigi Ricciin Rome (Teatro Valle)
