William Mason

William Mason (born January 24, 1829 in Boston , † July 14, 1908 in New York City ) was an American pianist , composer and music teacher .

Life

Mason studied from 1849 in Leipzig with Ignaz Moscheles , Moritz Hauptmann and Ernst Friedrich Richter , then in Weimar with Franz Liszt and in Prague with Alexander Dreyschock . He performed as a concert pianist and finally settled in New York in 1855 as a pianist and piano teacher .

Mason composed ballads, jokes , dances and caprices for the piano that are close to salon music . He also wrote several music pedagogical writings.
