action

Background: The farmer girl Alina from Provence is stolen by pirates and taken to Golconda in India. There the old king falls in love with her and marries Alina. Soon the king dies and Alina becomes queen.

Plot of the opera: After the king's death, Alina should choose a new husband. The noble silk loves her, but she still mourns the French officer Ernesto Volmar, whom she loved. Alina's friend Fiorina was also stolen by pirates. Fiorina left her husband Belfiore behind, but he meant little to her.

Three cannon shots announce the arrival of a ship: the French ambassador is expected. It is Alina's friend Ernesto Volmar who is accompanied by Belfiore. In order to test whether the men have remained true to their former feelings, they are subjected to an examination. After all sorts of errors and confusions - among other things, a revolution instigated by Alina's admirer Silk is put down - the story ends with a happy ending for both couples.
