Konrad Viktor Pressel (born July 24, 1857 in Olten , Canton Solothurn , † January 20, 1929 in Icking , Upper Bavaria ) was a Swiss hydraulic engineer and university professor .

Life

He was born to parents in Württemberg. His father, Wilhelm Pressel , was in charge of the construction of the Hauenstein tunnel .

He received his Matura at a grammar school in Vienna and completed military service in Berlin. He then studied two semesters of Law at the University of Vienna then mathematics and mechanical engineering at the Technical Universities in Graz , Vienna and Munich. He then worked on tunnel construction in Thuringia and Tuscany.

In 1886 he was an assistant at the Technical University of Munich . In 1887 he was the construction manager of Brandt & Brandau for the Suram tunnel of the Transcaucasian railway in the Caucasus. He then worked for the Linde company .

In 1899 he was employed as construction manager on the south side of the Simplon Tunnel , for which he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Basel in 1905 . In 1906 he was appointed professor of tunnel engineering at the Technical University in Munich and also gave hydraulic engineering lectures in the academic year 1906/1907 . He later advised on the construction of the Mittenwald Railway and the construction of the Walchensee power station .

In the autumn of 1908 Pressel wrote a “contribution to the measurement of the content of water locks ”, which was published in 1909 in the Schweizerische Bauzeitung . He was later informed about this problem by Max Mayr . The work represented the first step-by-step calculation of the mirror movement and was a significant advance in its time. Later, the type of calculation was no longer able to meet the requirements and was initially improved and finally replaced by the string tension method .
