Benjamin Ipavec
Benjamin Ipavec (also Ipavic ) (born December 24, 1829 in Šentjur ; † December 20, 1908 in Graz ) was a Slovenian composer.
Ipavec studied music and medicine in Vienna and Graz and settled there as a doctor and surgeon. In Graz he worked as a primary in the surgery department of the newly built Anna Children's Hospital.
As a composer, he is considered to be one of the most important representatives of Slovenian music in the 19th century. His songs (based on texts by France Prešeren , Anton Aškerc , Oton Župančič , Josip Murn and others) earned him the reputation of the "Slovenian Schubert". In addition to four major cantatas, he also composed a Slovenian operetta and the first Slovenian opera Teharski plemici , which premiered in the Ljubljana Theater in 1892.
After 1900 Ipavec withdrew from public musical life. He died just 4 months after the death of his younger brother Gustav Ipavec . His older brother Alojz Ipavec also became known as a composer.
