Oton Župančič
Oton (Otto) Župančič (born January 23, 1878 in Vinica , Bela krajina ; † June 11, 1949 in Ljubljana ) was a Slovenian writer and translator .
Life
Župančič attended high school in Ljubljana and Novo mesto and studied history and geography in Vienna from 1896 . He worked as an archivist and director of the National Theater in Ljubljana . Along with Ivan Cankar , Dragotinkette and Josip Murn , he is considered the founder of modernism in Slovenian literature. In 1913 he married Ana Kessler ( Ana Župančič ), daughter of Marija Kessler and sister of Vera Albendet . During the Italian and German occupation of Slovenia in World War II, he sympathized with the Slovenian Liberation Front and wrote poetry under various pseudonyms for anti-fascist magazines underground. After the end of the war in 1945 he received several honorary posts and awards from the communist regime of Yugoslavia. He died in 1949 and was buried in the Ljubljana Žale cemetery, like his childhood friends Ivan Cankar, Dragotinkette and Josip Murn.

In addition, Župančič was also an important translator into Slovenian. He translated most of the Shakespeare plays , but B. also works by Dante , Calderón , Molière , Goethe , Dickens or Tolstoy .
