Jan Stefani

Jan Stefani (* around 1747 in Prague ; † February 24, 1829 in Warsaw ) was a Czech composer and violinist who worked in Poland.

Stefani worked as Kapellmeister in Prague and later was a violinist with the Vienna Court Orchestra. In 1771 he became concertmaster of the last Polish king, Stanislaus II August . After his abdication in 1795, he became conductor of the Warsaw Opera.

He composed oratorios , masses , wind partitas, polonaise and eleven operas , the first of which - The Krakowites and the Mountain People (full original title Cud mniemany, czyli Krakowiacy i Górale ) - was performed more than two hundred times. His son Józef Stefani was also known as a composer.
