- Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy will conduct the posthumous world premiere of Franz Schubert's Great Symphony in C major at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig on March 21 at the suggestion of Robert Schumann . However, the symphony was slow to gain acceptance.

- September 20 : The world premiere of the Komische Oper Caramo or Das Fischerstechen by Albert Lortzing takes place at the Stadttheater in Leipzig .
- November 17th : Oberto conte di San Bonifacio , Giuseppe Verdi's first opera , is premiered at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. Although the opera, based on a libretto by Antonio Piazza and Temistocle Solera, was a success at the world premiere , it failed to establish itself in the operatic repertoire in the following years .
