- Jan. 24 : At the Théâtre-Italien in Paris which takes place premiere of the opera I Puritani ( The Puritans ) by Vincenzo Bellini with libretto by Carlo Pepoli after the comedy Têtes rondes et cavaliers who turn to Walter Scott's novel Old Mortality is based.
- February 23 : In Paris, the opera La juive ( Die Jüdin ) by Jacques Fromental Halévy with the libretto by Eugène Scribe takes place . Appreciated by Giuseppe Verdi as much as Richard Wagner , the opera became a series success: by 1893 it was performed 550 times at the Paris Opera alone.
- February 28 : World premiere of the opera La marquise by Adolphe Adam at the Opéra-Comique in Paris
- March 12th : World premiere of the opera Marin Faliero by Gaetano Donizetti at Théâtre-Italien, Paris

- August 15 : World premiere of the opera Chiara di Montalbano in Francia by Luigi Ricci in Milan (Teatro alla Scala)
- September 26 : At the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, the opera Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti celebrates a triumphant success at its world premiere with Fanny Tacchinardi-Persiani and Gilbert Duprez in the leading roles. The libretto is by Salvadore Cammarano based on the novel The Bride of Lammermoor by Walter Scott .

- December 16 : The world premiere of the comic opera L'éclair (The Lightning) by Jacques Fromental Halévy takes place at the Opéra-Comique in Paris .
- December 30 : At the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Gaetano Donizetti's lyrical tragedy (opera) Maria Stuarda based on the drama Maria Stuart by Friedrich Schiller is premiered in the original. Maria Malibran sings the title role, but is indisposed, which contributes to the failure of the opera, which is only rediscovered 123 years later. The opera is a second version of the opera published last year under the title Buondelmonte .
