Olof Åhlström

Olof Åhlström (born August 14, 1756 in Vårdinge (now Södertälje municipality ), † August 11, 1835 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish composer and music publisher.

Life

Olof Åhlström came from a rural setting to the Royal Academy of Music in 1772, where he was a student of Ferdinand Zellbell . From 1776 to 1792 he was organist at St. Mary's Church and from 1792 to 1835 Åhlström was organist at St. Jacob's Church in Stockholm, at the same time he was committed to the Ministry of Navy as a councilor in 1805. As the only music publisher in Sweden, he received the royal privilege to print music for 20 years in 1788, which was extended in 1808. Åhlström had no competition in this area until 1818. He brought out works by Joseph Martin Kraus , Joseph Haydn and Johann Gottlieb Naumann , among others .

Åhlström composed an opera , drama music, piano sonatas with violin and vocal music. The collections of Musikaliskt Tidsfördrif (1789–1834) and “Skaldestycken satte i musik” (1794–1823), which contained more than 200 songs, came out in his printing works . With Arvid August Afzelius he edited a Swedish folk dance collection. He also emerged as the arranger of songs by his compatriot Carl Michael Bellman .
