Arvid August Afzelius
Arvid August Afzelius ( pronunciation : [ ˌaɹːvid ˌɑu̯gɵst ˈafseːliɵs ], born May 6, 1785 in Hornborga , † September 25, 1871 in Enköping ) was the first collector of Swedish folk songs .
Life
Afzelius studied at Uppsala University and, after his ordination in 1811, was first extraordinary and from 1820 full court preacher in Stockholm . From 1828 until his death he worked as a pastor in Enköping. He had been a member of Götiska Förbundet since 1811 and was elected to the Kungliga Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Academies in 1842 and to the Royal Swedish Music Academy in 1857 . He was also a member of the congenial nordiske oldskriftselskab and the Kungliga Samfundet för utgivande av handskrifter rörande Scandinavia's historia .
Afzelius' particular importance lies in his contributions to the popularization of Old Norse literature and the collection of Swedish folk songs. Between 1811 and 1818 he published translations of the Hervarar saga , the Völuspá and the Lieder Edda . Together with Erik Gustaf Geijer , he published the first printed collection of Swedish folk songs with melodies in three volumes under the title Svenska folk-visor från forntiden from 1814 to 1818 . The musical arrangement of the melodies was carried out by the musical director of Uppsala University , Friedrich Haeffner . The fundamental work stimulated further collections of folk songs and inspired many composers in Sweden. Afzelius also wrote poems himself, which were widespread at the time and were awarded by the Svenska Academies . A hymn is still in the current Swedish hymn book (No. 22).
His Svenska folkets sago-häfder eller Fädereslandets historia, sådan hon lefvat och till en del ännu lefver i sägner folksånger och andra minnesmärken (11 volumes, 1839–70) are a collection of folk traditions about events in Swedish history.
