Friedrich Richard Faltin (born January 5, 1835 in Danzig , † June 1, 1918 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish composer , organist , music teacher and collector of Finnish folk music .

Life

Richard Faltin was of German origin and came from Danzig . He worked as an organ virtuoso , organ teacher, conductor and composer . After studying in Danzig (with Friedrich Wilhelm Markull ), Dessau (with Friedrich Schneider ) and Leipzig , he was initially a music teacher at an institute in Viipuri from 1856 to 1869 , where he founded a singing and orchestral society. From 1869 he was Kapellmeister at the Swedish Theater and conductor of the symphony concerts in Helsinki, in 1870 organist at the Nikolaikirche and university music director . From 1871 to 1884 he was the conductor of an oratorio association he founded, from 1873 to 1879 Kapellmeister at the Finnish Opera (a department of the Finnish National Theater ), from 1882 organ teacher at the Conservatory (from 1897 professor). Faltin made important contributions to Finnish musical life, next to Fredrik Pacius he was the most important representative of the German influence on Finnish music.

His two piano sonatas from 1850 were early works that had been written in Germany. He published three chorale books (1871, 1888, 1897) and a collection of organ preludes and chorale finals; he also published men's, women's and mixed choirs and songs. In terms of instrumental music, he composed, among other things, variations on his own theme (1861), a piano work that shows the influence of Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy . The composer Jean Sibelius was one of Faltin's pupils .

Faltin's son was the surgeon Richard Wilhelm Gottlieb Faltin (1867–1952).
