Charles Constantin

Titus Charles Constantin (born January 7, 1835 in Marseille , † October 27, 1891 in Pau ) was a French conductor and composer.

Live and act

Charles Constantin studied composition at the Paris Conservatory with Ambroise Thomas . With the cantata David Rizzio based on a text by Gustave Chouquet , he won the Second Grand Prix de Rome in 1863 ; The winner of the first prize this year was Jules Massenet .

The former director of the Société nationale des Beaux-Arts , Louis Martinet , hired him to conduct the Théâtre des Fantaisies-Parisiennes, which he opened in 1865 . In addition to German and Italian operas, he brought the repertoire of the French Opéra Comique with compositions by Ferdinand Hérold ( Les Rosières , Le Muletier ), Pierre-Alexandre Monsigny ( Le Déserteur ), François-André Philidor ( Le Sorcier ) and François-Adrien Boieldieu ( Le Nouveau Seigneur du village , Le Calife de Baghdad , La Fête du village voisin ) for the performance. In 1869 he conducted the world premiere of Federico Ricci's Une Folie à Rome .

In 1871 Constantin was hired to work at the Casino on Rue Cadet, a concert and ballroom, where he had to give three big concerts a week, based on the famous Pasdeloup Concerts . After an engagement at the Athénée (1872–73) Hippolyte Holstein brought him to his new Théâtre de la Renaissance as conductor . In early 1876 he was appointed to succeed Adolphe Deloffre at the Opéra-Comique . The new director of the house, Léon Carvalho , gave the position to Charles Lamoureux in September of the same year .

Constantin left Paris for health reasons. For some time he conducted at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse and at the Royal Theater of Lisbon. In 1878 he was hired as artistic director at the Royan Casino , where he organized concerts and opera performances every summer season. In the same year he settled in Pau as conductor of the city theater.

In addition to some stage works, Constantin composed orchestral fantasies and piano arrangements for popular contemporary operettas and operas.
