Claus Nielsen Schall (born April 28, 1757 in Copenhagen ; † August 10, 1835 there ) was a Danish composer.

Life

At first, Schall was Tanzeleve at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen, later he became a violinist, repetitor in 1776 , concertmaster in 1792 and conductor in 1817 . The Danish premiere of Carl Maria von Weber's opera Der Freischütz took place under his direction in 1822 . He composed twenty ballets , several singspiele , violin concertos and pieces for violin and figured bass .

Claus Schall also wrote the music for the ballet piece Lagertha (1801, choreography by Vincenzo Galeotti ), which deals with the story of the Nordic warrior ( shield maiden ) Lathgertha and includes songs, pantomime , dance and dialogues as a total work of art . The models were the Gesta Danorum by Saxo Grammaticus and a play by Christen Pram from 1789. The performance at the Royal Theater under the director Galeotti was well attended.

Solo and choral songs with guitar accompaniment have come down to us from his brother Peder Schall (born December 30, 1762 in Copenhagen; † February 1, 1820 there ), who was a cellist in the court orchestra and a guitar virtuoso.
