Henry Holmes
Henry Holmes (born November 7, 1839 in London , † December 9, 1905 in San Francisco ) was an English composer , violinist and music teacher .
Life
Henry Holmes had his first violin training from his father and was also active as a choir singer. In 1847, at the age of eight, he performed as a violinist at the Haymarket Theater with his brother Alfred Holmes . In 1853 they gave concerts again in London, in 1855 they went on tour through Belgium, Germany, Austria and Sweden.
Holmes later settled in London, where he worked as a violin professor at the Royal College of Music . His students included u. a. Julius Gold , Arnold Dolmetsch and Kathleen Parlow .
Holmes composed five symphonies, a concert overture and a violin concerto a. a. Chamber music works, including two string quintets, as well as the cantatas Praise Ye The Lord and Christmas and numerous songs.
