Julius Gold
Julius Gold (born February 18, 1884 in Saint Joseph (Missouri) , † January 29, 1969 ) was an American violinist, music teacher and scholar.
Gold came to San Francisco with his family in 1891, where he first had violin lessons with Henry Heyman and Henry Holmes and studied violin with Bernhard Listemann and Émile Sauret at the Chicago College of Music from 1900 to 1905 . This was followed by a degree in music theory and history with Bernhard Ziehn .
From 1910 to 1914 he was professor of music at Drake University in Des Moines. From 1914 to 1937 he was violinist in the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra from 1922 to 1937 and in the San Francisco Opera Association . In 1931 he gave summer lectures on the fundamentals of music at Stanford University . From 1931 to 1935 he was professor of counterpoint and composition at Dominican College in San Rafael, California, after which he worked as a private teacher and musicologist. His students included u. a. Winthrop Sargeant , Frank Fragale , Meredith Willson and Isaac Stern .
Gold left behind a 10,000-volume music library, which is part of the Library of Congress as the Julius Gold Collection , as well as extensive correspondence.
