Bernhard Listemann

Bernhard Friedrich Wilhelm Listemann (born August 28, 1841 in Schlotheim / Thuringia , † February 11, 1917 in Chicago ) was a German-American violinist and music teacher.

Listemann studied with Ferdinand David at the Leipzig Conservatory , and was also a student of Henri Vieuxtemps and Joseph Joachim . In 1867 he moved with his brother Ferdinand to New York, where in 1870 he became concertmaster of the Philharmonic Orchestra, which had recently been founded. In 1874 he settled in Boston with his brother.

Here he founded his own string quartet and played the violin in the piano trio with Ernst Perabo and Adolphe Hartdegen . In 1879 he founded the Boston Philharmonic Club and the following year the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra , of which he was director until 1893.

From 1893 to 1903 he was a violin professor at the Chicago College of Music . His students included the concert violinist J. Abbie Clarke Hogan , the concert violinist Francis MacMillen , the composer William Edwin Haesche and the music teacher Julius Gold . Listemann published a violin school ( Study on Violin Playing ).
