Benjamin Dwight Allen

Benjamin Dwight Allen (born February 16, 1831 in Sturbridge , Massachusetts , † March 4, 1914 in Wellesley (Massachusetts) ) was an American organist and composer .

Allen was trained in Worcester , Mass. He was here from 1845 teacher and organist and from 1857 to 1894 organist and choirmaster of the Union Congregational Church. He founded the Worcester Music Festival in 1858. From 1871 to 1876 he also taught at the Conservatory and the University of Boston . From 1894 he headed the music department of the college in Wisconsin and finally worked from 1902 to 1905 as an organist at the Manhattan Congregational Church in New York .

Everyone composed anthems and songs , of which only a small part has appeared in print to date. His main merit was his teaching, with which he decisively promoted the development of musical life in the USA.
