Georg Michael Telemann

Georg Michael Telemann (born April 20, 1748 in Plön , † March 4, 1831 in Riga ) was a German church musician and composer . He was the grandson of Georg Philipp Telemann .

life and work

Georg Michael Telemann, son of the Plön pastor Andreas Telemann (1715–1755) and Augusta Clara Catharina Capsius, came to the house of his then 74-year-old grandfather Georg Philipp Telemann in Hamburg after the death of their father in 1755 . In the Hanseatic city he attended the learned school of the Johanneum and then until 1770 the academic high school . At the age of 19, in 1767, he composed the mourning ode to the sad death of my grandfather, Georg Philipp Telemann, the Hamburg Music Choir Director . Georg Michael Telemann took over the vacant office of Cantor Johannei and Director of Music for the city of Hamburg until the position of his grandfather Georg Philipp Telemann was filled again with Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach in March 1768 . Between 1770 and 1772 he studied theology at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel .

In 1773 Telemann became music director of the city churches and cantor at Riga Cathedral . At the same time he taught at the cathedral school . In Riga he performed at least 21 passions of his famous grandfather. In 1812 Telemann edited a chorale book with his own organ arrangements. In the following year he was also given the office of organist at the cathedral church while retaining the cantor's office . Georg Michael Telemann was retired in 1828 at his request because of an eye disease.

Georg Michael Telemann is considered the administrator of the work of his grandfather Georg Philipp Telemann.
