Traugott Maximilian Eberwein (born October 27, 1775 in Weimar , † December 2, 1831 in Rudolstadt ) was a German composer and conductor . In the literature he is often referred to as Max Eberwein .

Life and effect

Coming from a family of musicians - his brother was the composer Franz Carl Adelbert Eberwein - he received his musical instruction from his father, a court musician, in his early youth. He also began to compose early on. This was followed by studies in musicology in Frankfurt am Main and in violin in Mainz . During these study trips he made the acquaintance of the Prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, who offered him a job as court musician. He then joined the court orchestra there as a violinist. In 1797 he was appointed court musician. At the beginning of the 19th century further study trips followed. a. to Rome , Naples and Vienna , where he made the acquaintance of Haydn . It was around this time that the first contact with Beethoven was made .

When he returned to Rudolstadt, he resumed his previous work and was appointed court conductor in 1817. In his position as music director he contributed to the fact that newer compositions were also included in the repertoire and thus took a cosmopolitan and progressive direction in the development and dissemination of the music of his time. For example, numerous works by Beethoven were performed. He was also committed to promoting young musicians and promoting music theater. He belonged to the Rudolstadt Masonic Lodge Günther for Eintracht . He died in Rudolstadt in 1831. The house where he died, in the entrance area of ​​which has been a memorial since 1995, has largely been preserved in its original condition and was given a plaque by the city of Rudolstadt as early as the 19th century.

Traugott Maximilian Eberwein was a very productive composer. The number of his works is in the hundreds. They document the stylistic transition from classic to romantic. His compositions mainly include operas , singspiele , overtures , symphonies , ballets and cantatas , concert and chamber music, songs and oratorios . In his songs he set numerous poems by Goethe to music . His works also attracted attention outside Thuringia and in other European countries and found their way into the concert repertoires there. He belonged to the circle of the Weimar Musenhof , whose best-known representatives are Duchess Anna Amalie and Goethe.

His son Julius Eberwein became parliamentary president in Rudolstadt.
