Romualdo Giovanni Battista Marenco (born March 1, 1841 in Novi Ligure , † October 9, 1907 in Milan ) was an Italian musician and composer.

biography

Marenco was the seventh of eight children of a municipality born in Novi Ligure. Like him, several of his siblings also showed musical talent. After a year of study at the municipal school in his hometown, he played from 1854 as a substitute musician in the orchestra of the local Teatro Carlo Alberto . He then completed a bassoon training and received a job as second bassoonist at the Teatro Andrea Doria in Genoa, for which he composed his first ballet Lo sbarco di Garibaldi a Marsala e la presa di Palermo (1862). Two symphonies that are said to have been composed during this period have been lost.

He then became a timpanist at the Teatro Apollo and finally a violinist at the Teatro Carlo Felice . He probably continued his training first with Emilio Taddei , later self-taught using the method of Stanislao Mattei and Fedele Fenaroli . He later left Genoa , possibly because of differences with the composer Serafino De Ferrari . Stays as a violinist in Canobbia, ballet director in Fossati and first violinist at the Istanbul Theater are not documented.

A contract with the Teatro alla Scala for the carnival season 1871–72 is known. 1872–73 and presumably beyond that until 1879 he acted as primo violino e direttore d'orchestra per il ballo . After the success of his ballet Sieba , which was performed at the Teatro Regio di Torino in 1878 and at La Scala the following year, he gave up his career as an orchestral musician and devoted himself entirely to composition. Marenco became known primarily as a ballet composer and then as an opera composer, and he also composed songs, chamber music and piano pieces.
