The opera rehearsal (subtitle: The noble dilettantes) is a comic opera in one act by Albert Lortzing (music and libretto). The first performance took place on January 20, 1851 in Frankfurt am Main. Meanwhile, Lortzing was in bed, deadly ill in his hometown Berlin. He died the following day.

action

Music is played a lot in the Count's castle. The entire staff is just rehearsing an opera. Hannchen, the chambermaid, confirmed herself as Kapellmeister. While the ensemble is taking a break, Hannchen notices two strangers in the garden. Who and what may they just be? Servant Martin is assigned to investigate this. Although he manages to contact one of the two, he still finds nothing. Now Hannchen takes matters into his own hands. She hears one of the two singing a song. The singer is Adolph von Reintal, a young baron. Because his uncle wanted to force him to marry a lady completely unknown to him, he had decided to run away at home and go on a journey with his servant Johann.

When Reintal sees the pretty count's daughter Luise, he is on fire. He wants to conquer this girl, no matter what the cost, especially since his servant has since learned that she is not yet to be forgiven and to be the count's only daughter. He wonders under what pretext he might get to know her. Then the saving idea comes to him: he and his servant introduce themselves as traveling singers who are looking for engagement.

Hannchen overheard the conversation between them and concludes correctly: The young stranger cannot be anyone other than the man who is actually supposed to be the countess's bridegroom. After Hannchen has taken Luise into her confidence under the guise of secrecy, Luise is overjoyed; because secretly she has already begun to rave about the stranger.

Now coffee and cake are served. The Countess is expecting Luise's bridegroom, but has to find out from her husband that he is not coming. Old Reintal had let him know by letter that the engagement - at least for the time being - would not work.

Unexpectedly, servant Martin announces the strange singers. When the younger - it's Reintal, of course - starts an aria, the old Count's heart is warm.

The time has come for the married couple to retire. As soon as they are gone, Reintal seeks Luise's proximity. Meanwhile, his servant flirts with Hannchen. After a few entanglements - meanwhile the old Reintal has also arrived - the engagement takes place.
