Panacea sounds

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Panacea-Klänge is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 161). The work was performed for the first time on January 23, 1855 in the Sofienbad Hall in Vienna.

Remarks

The waltz was composed and performed in Mardi Gras in 1855 on the occasion of the medical students' ball (medicine ball ) . Panakeia or the Latin form Panacea means a mythical universal medicine. Hence the relation to the budding physicians. The composer continued with earlier works such as B. Sound waves or novellas began to turn to the form of the concert waltz and thus met again with harsh criticism. One of the main critics was again Eduard Hanslick , who condemned the new style of waltz. As a result, the work was then rarely performed or not performed at all. Some music lovers, however, value the waltz as one of the best pieces by Johann Strauss in the 1850s.

The playing time on the CD listed in the itemization is 12 minutes and 35 seconds. Depending on the musical conception of the conductor, this time can change by up to a minute plus or minus.
