Moth (waltz)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nachtfalter is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 157). The work was first performed on August 28, 1854 in Unger's casino in Vienna.

Remarks

The work was composed for the annual Hernalser Kirchtag (church fair) and was premiered during this event in Unger's casino, where Strauss played every year on this occasion. The term moth is ambiguous and can mean both butterfly and night owl . Strauss has considered both possibilities in the work. In one part the flying of butterflies is musically imitated and in another part the humid and happy life of a night owl is imitated with happy melodies. The response to the work was rather subdued at the time. The waltz only caught on later and found prominent followers in Franz Liszt and Hans von Bülow .

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 8 minutes and 52 seconds. Depending on the musical conception of the conductor, this time can change by up to a minute plus or minus.
