Leopoldstadt polka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Leopoldstädter Polka is a polka by Johann Strauss Sohn (op.168). The work was performed for the first time on January 29, 1855 in the Zum Sperl dance hall in Vienna .

Remarks

The polka was composed in Mardi Gras in 1855 for a charity event for the benefit of the poor in Vienna's Leopoldstadt and premiered on this occasion. The work was dedicated to the organizing committee of this event. To a certain extent, Strauss had a home game here, as he was a resident of Leopoldstadt himself. Regardless of these facts, on April 22nd of the same year he presented this polka again as a novelty in Vienna's Volksgarten . The work remained in the Strauss Chapel's repertoire for a long time and is still performed occasionally today. It is a musical reminder of Leopoldstadt in Vienna in the middle of the 19th century.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 3 minutes and 36 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
