Aurora polka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Aurora Polka is a polka by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 165). The work was performed for the first time on February 14, 1855 in the Zum Sperl dance hall in Vienna .

Remarks

The polka was composed for the ball of the Aurora artists' association in Mardi Gras in 1855 and was premiered on this occasion. The artists' association, named after the Roman goddess of the dawn ( Aurora ), did not last long. It dissolved soon after 1859. In that year (1859) the composer wrote the last work of this kind for the Aurora with the Aurora Ball Polka . Then a second association of artists was set up, which was named Hesperus . All three Strauss brothers became members there and enriched their balls with new and old works. The aurora polka was still dedicated to the old organization. It was in the Strauss Orchestra's repertoire for a long time.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 2 minutes and 46 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
