Johann Jacob Röchling (born March 17, 1746 in St. Johann (Saar) ; † August 7, 1822 in Völklingen-Fenne ) was a merchant and landowner , mayor of old Saarbrücken (1798–1799) and Völklingen (1816–1821) .

origin

The out Westphalia originating branch of the family of his grandfather Johann Thomas Röchling (1690-1764) laid the foundations for the family business, which initially in the field of raw materials, construction and fuel trade and in the emerging from the 18th century coal and steel industry in the Saar region a should take a leading position. Through family connections with the local merchant families, the educated and upper middle class of the time, the Röchlings were able to increasingly consolidate their influence and social position. Jacob's father was the coal and wood wholesaler Johann Thomas Röchling (* 1720), his mother Anna Margaretha (1714–1792) nee. Kohl.

Life

Jacob was baptized at his birthplace on March 19, 1746 and confirmed in 1760 . On April 12, 1775 he married Dorothea Margaretha (1753-1822), daughter of the Sankt Johann merchant Heinrich Jacob Karcher (1730-1775) in Dudweiler . Jacob Röchling became Ludwig Schmidtborn's brother-in-law , who was to succeed him in the office of Saarbrücken mayor when he married his wife's younger sister Louisa Elisabetha (* 1759) the following year. The Röchling couple had two sons, Karl (died early) and Heinrich Jacob (1776–1838).

Röchling belonged to the princely battalion of the Counts of Nassau-Saarbrücken and became major in 1776 . However, this meant that he was less a member of the fighting troops than, as a regimental officer, responsible for the daily procurement and administrative tasks. In 1777 he worked in princely services as a merchant. In 1778 he acquired the Fenne estate near Fürstenhausen , which he managed until his death. On May 15, 1793, the troops of the French revolutionary army moved into Saarbrücken. They captured all the princely officials and deported them to Metz .

At the end of the First Coalition War , Saarbrücken became a canton municipality in the Département de la Sarre, established in 1798 . Röchling became President of the Saarbrücken municipal administration on April 8, 1798 and held this office until December 1799. With the end of his work in the French administration, Jacob Röchling moved to his estate. After the defeat of Napoleon , after the borders of France were corrected to the state before 1790 by the Second Peace of Paris and the surrounding area fell to Prussia , the Völklingen city administration was reconstituted. Röchling was elected mayor in 1816 and held this office until 1821. He died on his estate at the age of 76, only a few weeks after the death of his wife, and was buried on August 9, 1822 in the churchyard of the Martinskirche (now leveled) in Völklingen.
