2nd piano concerto (Liszt)

The Piano Concerto No. 2 in A major by Franz Liszt is a work for piano and orchestra.

In addition to the 1st piano concerto and the dance of death, it is one of his most popular compositions for pianoforte and orchestra. Liszt also worked on a third piano concerto, which, however, remained unfinished and has only survived in fragments.

Emergence

Liszt wrote the work between 1830 and 1839. In 1849, 1853, 1857 and 1861 he rewrote it each time. The piece is dedicated to Hans von Bronsart ; it was premiered on January 7, 1857 in Weimar under the direction of the composer and with Bronsart at the piano. The original title of the piece is Concert symphonique .

The concerto is written for solo piano, three flutes (the third also piccolo), two oboes , two clarinets (in A), two bassoons , two horns , two trumpets , three trombones , cymbals, timpani and strings. The average playing time is about 22 minutes.

Liszt later wrote an arrangement of the concerto for two pianos.

Unusually for a piano concerto of its time, as in his first piano concerto, the movements merge without a break.
