The Dance of Death, as Paraphrase on " Dies irae " or as a danse macabre called, is a symphonic variation cycle of Franz Liszt for solo - piano and orchestra , which is a topic of Gregorian chant , the Dies Irae ( Lat , such as: Day of Wrath ) , with the theme of the dance of death .

The work was created in Weimar from 1847–1849 and was revised several times by Liszt in the following years, in 1853 and 1859 particularly intensively. On April 15, 1865, the premiere took place in The Hague under the direction of Johannes Verhulst with Hans von Bülow as soloist, to whom the piece is dedicated with the words "The generous Progonen of our art, Hans von Bülow, admirable and grateful". It takes about 16 minutes.

Liszt created several versions:

  • First version for piano and orchestra, 1847–53 ( Searle directory (= p.) 126–1), printed in 1919 by Breitkopf & Härtel (Leipzig) under the title De Profundis (published by Ferruccio Busoni ). A copyist's manuscript of the first version of this version was labeled “Dead Dance Fantasy for Pianoforte and Orchestra. terminé le 21 Octobre 1849. “In 1853 a second, in 1859 a third version.
  • Second version for piano and orchestra, 1859–64 (?) (Pp. 126–2), printed in 1865 by Siegel (Leipzig).
  • Arrangement for 2 pianos, 1859–65 (?) (P. 652), printed in 1865 by Siegel (Leipzig).
  • Arrangement for 1 piano, 1860–65 (?) (P. 525), printed in 1865 by Siegel (Leipzig).
