Le beau monde (quadrille)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Le beau monde is a quadrille by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 199). It was first performed on September 6, 1857 in Pavlovsk , Russia.

Remarks

The work was written on the composer's second trip to Russia, which took place in the summer of 1857. In the meantime he had found a good audience in Russia and, according to a letter to his publisher in Vienna, his appearances were paid significantly better than in the Danube metropolis. So Russia, or rather the area around St. Petersburg , was a beautiful world for him. This explains the French name of the quadrille. (At that time, French, along with Russian of course, was the preferred language in Russian aristocratic circles.) Originally there was apparently also a choral version of the work, although the text only consisted of the syllables la-la-la . This version was not played in Vienna. The first performance in the imperial city took place on November 1st, 1857 in the Volksgarten in Vienna .

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 5 minutes and 33 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
