Telegraphic dispatches

Telegraphische Depeschen is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 195). The work was first performed on September 6, 1857 in Pavlovsk , Russia.

Remarks

The work was written in the summer of 1857 during the composer's trip to Russia. Accordingly, it was also premiered in Pavlovsk near St. Petersburg . Here, Strauss takes up the relatively new medium of telegraphy and uses onomatopoeia to process the sending of dispatches and telegrams. He was probably stimulated by the telegram traffic between St. Petersburg and Vienna. At the end of the coda, Strauss quotes the melody Ja nur a Kaiserstadt, ja nur a Wien . With that he greeted his hometown from far away Russia. The first performance of the work in Vienna took place on October 18, 1857 in the Volksgarten under the direction of Josef Strauss . The waltz was dedicated to the pianist Johann Promberger (1810–1890).

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 10 minutes and 55 seconds. Depending on the musical conception of the conductor, this time can change by up to a minute plus or minus.
