Souvenir de Nice

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Souvenir de Nizza is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 200). The work was first performed in Pavlovsk , Russia , in the summer of 1857 .

Remarks

The work was written during Johann Strauss' second trip to Russia in the summer of 1857. The original title was Memory of Nice . The date of the premiere in Pavlovsk is not known. The Russian imperial couple may have been present on this occasion. The naming is also related to the Russian royal family. Nikolai Alexandrowitsch Romanow , the eldest son of Tsar Alexander II and his wife Marie von Hessen-Darmstadt, was seriously ill and hoped to find rest in Nice. Johann Strauss took this as an opportunity to call his waltz Memories of Nice . The work was dedicated to the Russian Empress Marie von Hessen-Darmstadt (1824–1880), to whom Strauss had already dedicated the waltz Coronation Songs the previous year . The sick heir to the throne ultimately did not recover from his suffering and died a few years later, in April 1865, in Nice of all places. In Austria the title of the waltz was changed to Souvenir de Nizza . The first performance in Vienna took place on February 8, 1858 in the Sofienbad hall as part of the carnival. The work was well received, but it never became really popular.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 8 minutes and 37 seconds. Depending on the musical conception of the conductor, this time can change by up to a minute plus or minus.
