Life

Ahlström was unable to complete his studies, which he began at Uppsala University in 1824 , due to lack of money, and therefore joined a traveling theater group. He lived from 1832 to 1842 as cathedral organist and music teacher in Västerås and was then a theater conductor and organist in Stockholm until his death. In 1845 he gave a concert in Berlin with Swedish folk tunes and dances.

Ahlström composed two operas based on libretti by Frans Hedberg , music for theater (including Agne , Positivhataren , Ringaren i Notre Dame , Hinko and Urdur ), a vocal symphony , chamber music and songs . Together with Per Conrad Boman , he edited Svenska folksånger, folkdanser och folklekar , the most famous of the folk song collections published in Sweden in the 19th century . In addition, he published the musical paperback (Swedish: Musikalisk fickordbok ) from 1852 , which appeared in several editions.
