Joseph Fischhof (born April 4, 1804 in Butschowitz , Moravia , † June 28, 1857 in Vienna ) was an Austrian composer , music teacher and author .

Life

Joseph Fischhof originally studied medicine in Brno and Vienna . Already at this time he was intensively involved with music, among others Ignaz von Seyfried was his teacher for composition. After the death of his father in 1827, he gave up his studies, devoted himself exclusively to music and was soon one of the most sought-after piano teachers in Vienna. In 1833 he was appointed professor of piano at the Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music . As a teacher, he had a great influence on a whole generation of pianists , whom he introduced to Bach , Beethoven and Chopin . Fischhof also tried his hand at composing piano pieces and songs, but was not successful here. On the other hand, he was very respected as a music author and his writings contributed a lot to a better understanding of music. Fischhof was also part of Robert Schumann's circle when he tried to establish himself in Vienna in 1838/1839 with his new magazine for music . He was also Clara Wieck's closest confidante during her stay in Vienna.

When he died, he left an important library with valuable autographs . It first came into the possession of the Berlin publisher Julius Friedländer , who sold it to the Royal Library in Berlin in 1859 . Among them is the so-called "Fischhof Manuscript" with important documents for a - not realized - biography of Beethoven . It also contains a copy of Beethoven's lost diary.

He himself kept a diary from September 8, 1827 to August 3, 1829, which is now in the Vienna Library .

family

Joseph Fischhof had a younger brother, the banker Julius Fischhof (1823-1887), whose son Robert Fischhof became a well-known pianist.
