Camille du Locle (born July 16, 1832 in Orange (Vaucluse) , † December 9, 1903 in Capri ) was a French theater director and librettist .

In 1869, Du Locle became the assistant to his father-in-law Emile Perin , who was director of the Paris Opera . From 1870 to 1874 he directed the Opéra-Comique together with Adolphe de Leuven . In this role he commissioned the composition of Georges Bizet's most famous opera Carmen , which premiered here in 1875.

For Giuseppe Verdi he wrote the libretto for the opera Don Carlos together with François Joseph Méry . He translated his operas Simon Boccanegra and La forza del destino into French. In the creation of the opera Aida , du Locle was the mediator between the Egyptologist Auguste Mariette , who had designed the first opera scenario, and Verdi.

For his friend, composer Ernest Reyer , he and Alfred Blau wrote the libretto for the opera Sigurd , which was composed in the 1860s but was not premiered until 1884.

In 1876 du Locle retired to Capri , where he built the Villa La Certosella in 1880 , which is now used as a hotel.
