Postillon d'amour

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Postillon d'amour is a polka française by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 317). The work was first performed on March 24, 1867 in Vienna's Volksgarten .

Remarks

The polka was written for the carnival of 1867 but was not premiered until March 24th in Vienna's Volksgarten. Johann Strauss took the work with him to Paris, where he made a guest appearance at the world exhibition in 1867 . There, however, the work lagged behind other compositions by Strauss in the audience's favor. The waltzes played there and some other works were much better received. Later on, the polka was somewhat forgotten and was rarely performed, if at all. This was also due to the fact that the composer's many compositions sometimes displaced each other from the concert schedule. There was simply an oversupply of such works. In 1899 music was again honored by Adolf Müller . He included it in the score of the operetta Wiener Blut , which he compiled based on motifs by Johann Strauss (son) .

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 3 minutes and 42 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
