Main building of the stock exchange

The Bourse de Tunis ( Arabic : بورصة تونس), officially called Bourse des Valeurs Mobilières de Tunis (BVMT) since November 15, 1995 , is a securities exchange based in Tunis ( Tunisia ). She is responsible for the administration, security and promotion of the Tunisian securities market. Your most important stock market index is the Tunindex .

history

The stock exchange was founded in February 1962. Although it was founded a relatively long time ago, the role of the stock exchange in financing the Tunisian economy has remained limited or even insignificant due to the dominance of the state and banks. This is reflected in significant levels of money creation and inflation . The stock exchange was therefore perceived more as a register of transactions than as a mirror of the economy with a place in the financing of companies. Indeed, at the end of 1986, market capitalization was barely 1% of GDP.

As part of a structural adjustment plan, a reform of the financial market was initiated in 1988 with the aim of creating a legal framework that enables the market to contribute to the financing of the economy. Bank deposits were taxed, interest on deposits fell due to the fall in inflation, and securities benefited from favorable taxation through the elimination of capital gains and dividend taxes. Also, the corporation dropped from 80% to 35%, whereby the increased importance of capital market.

In October 2019, the Word Federation of Exchanges (WFE) announced, after examining the Bourse de Tunis' application, that it would become one of its members. This membership enables the Tunisian Stock Exchange to increase its visibility with foreign investors, companies listed on the Tunisian Stock Exchange and the general public.
