August Kindermann (born February 6, 1817 in Potsdam , † March 6, 1891 in Munich ) was a German opera singer ( bass ).

Life

He was the son of a weaver and was supposed to be a bookseller. Since he had a beautiful voice, he was accepted into the choir association of the Berlin royal opera house at the age of 15 . There he sang his first solo part on September 6, 1837. But since he was unable to make progress due to intrigues in Berlin, he moved to the Leipzig City Theater as the second bass player in 1839 . The director at the time, Friedrich Sebald Ringelhardt, gathered all kinds of talents, and Kindermann was soon a favorite of the public. He associated with Albert Lortzing , Robert Blum and Karl Herloßsohn . There he also met the pianist Magdalena Hofmann, who later became his partner.

In 1846 he wanted to move to Vienna, but the Munich court conductor Franz Lachner persuaded him to give a guest performance. This was so successful that he accepted an engagement there on August 1, 1846 and stayed until the end of his life. In 1869 and 1870 he sang Wotan in the first two operas of Richard Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen (Rheingold, Die Walküre) at the Royal Court and National Theater in Munich and Titurel in the world premiere of Wagner's Parsifal in Bayreuth.

With his wife Magdalena, née Hofmann, he had several daughters who became known as opera singers:

The son August also became known as an opera singer in Weimar and Hamburg, Magdalena was co-director of the Residenztheater in Dresden from 1891 to 1906 .
