Therese Grob (born November 16, 1798 in Vienna ; † March 17, 1875 there ) was the first love of the composer Franz Schubert .

Life

She was the daughter of Heinrich Grob (who had died around 1814) and his wife Therese, who owned a silk goods shop in Lichtenthal . Schubert felt drawn to the beautiful voice of the girl Therese and the musical talent of her brother Heinrich, who played the cello and especially the piano.

At the age of 16, Therese Grob sang the soprano solo at the world premiere of Schubert's Mass No. 1 in F major, D 105 under the direction of the composer in the parish church in Lichtenthal . She also took part in the first performances of the G, B, and C major masses.

Franz Schubert dedicated his string quartet in B flat major op. Post. 168 (D 112) to her.

In his memoirs, Anselm Hüttenbrenner quotes Schubert as follows:

“I loved one very dearly and she loved me too. She was ... a little younger than me and ... wasn't pretty, had flat scars on her face - but she was good, good-hearted. She hoped for three years that I would marry her; however, I couldn't find a job that would have provided for both of us. She then married someone else at one of her parents' wishes, which pained me very much. I still love her, and since then I haven't liked anyone as much or better as her. It wasn't meant for me. "
