Patrick Dehornoy (born September 11, 1952 in Rouen ; † September 4, 2019 ) was a French mathematician who dealt with set theory and algebra , especially with braid groups . He was a professor at Caen University .

From 1971 he studied in Paris at the École normal supérieure (ENS) and from 1975 he conducted research for the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS). In 1978 he received his doctorate from the University of Paris with Kenneth Walter McAloon. Since 1983 he was a professor in Caen.

Among other things, he dealt with applications of set theory and logic in the theory of braids. In particular, he found such an application of the theory of large cardinals in another area of mathematics. Dehornoy examined braids from a wide variety of perspectives (isotopic problem, coloration, cryptography , classification, order). He also dealt with generalizations of braid groups, such as the garside groups.

From 2009 he was deputy director of the mathematical institute Institut de sciences mathématiques et de leurs interactions (INSMI) of the CNRS.

In 1999 he received the Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Prize from the Institut d'Estudis Catalans and in 2005 the Prix Langevin of the Académie des Sciences . In 2002 he became a senior member of the Institut universitaire de France .

He was married and had three children.
