The son of Alexei Nikolayevich Titov embarked on a military career like his father. Under the influence of his friends Michail Glinka and Alexander Dargomischski , he turned increasingly to composition in later years. He was the first Russian composer whose songs also attracted attention abroad and was therefore considered the "father of Russian songs". He also composed piano pieces, dances and marches.
