Julio Fonseca

Julio Fonseca (born May 22, 1885 in San José ; † June 22, 1950 ibid) was a Costa Rican composer.

Fonseca studied from 1902 at the Conservatory of Milan and from 1904 in Brussels with Edgar Tinel . In 1906 he returned to Costa Rica. From 1927 to 1942 he taught at the Colegio Superior de Señoritas and then music theory and harmony at the Conservatory and also worked as an organist and freelance composer in San José.

He composed an operetta and a children's comedy, an orchestral suite, an overture , a piano concerto , chamber music works, piano pieces, five masses , cantatas and songs . He sometimes used Indian melodies in his compositions and is considered one of the founders of Costa Rican music.
