Edgar (Pierre Joseph) Tinel (born March 27, 1854 in Sinaai, today a district of Sint-Niklaas in Flanders, † October 28, 1912 in Brussels ) was a Belgian composer , pianist and church musician.

Life

After studying in Brussels with Louis Brassin (piano) and François-Auguste Gevaert (composition), he began a career as a piano virtuoso. On September 1, 1877, he married the poet Emma Coeckelbergh (1852–1921). In 1887 he composed the cantata "Klokke Roeland", with which he won the Belgian Prix de Rome in music. In 1881 he followed Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens as director of the "Mechelen Institute for Church Music", today's Lemmensinstitut . In this capacity he was invited to Rome by Pope Pius X to exchange views on the future role of music in the liturgy.

In 1889 Tinel became inspector for music schools throughout the Kingdom of Belgium. In 1896 Gevaert appointed him to the Brussels Conservatory as professor of counterpoint and fugue theory , and in 1909 he became director of the university. In 1902 the Royal Academy of Arts accepted him into its ranks, and in 1910 he received the honorary title of court conductor. His students include Michel Brusselmans , Arthur Meulemans and Joseph Ryelandt .

His church music is in the style of Palestrina . His two concerts - Te Deen , his oratorio and his religious dramas show his admiration for Johann Sebastian Bach . His piano compositions, on the other hand, tend to make Robert Schumann , Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Johannes Brahms sound again. The main publishers of his works were Breitkopf & Härtel and the Schott publishing house in Brussels.
