Joseph Victor Marie Ryelandt (born April 7, 1870 in Bruges , † June 29, 1965 ibid) was a Belgian composer and director of the Conservatory in Bruges.

Life

Joseph Ryelandt came from the French-speaking upper class of Bruges and received music lessons from an early age. He initially studied 4 semesters of philosophy in Namür and two semesters of law in Leuven, but continued his musical activities in the meantime. In 1891 he began to study music as a private student with Edgar Tinel after he had presented him with his own composition.

From 1895 he devoted himself exclusively to composing until he was appointed director of the Bruges City Conservatory in 1924. He was involved in the organization of the Reine Elisabeth Concours . From 1929 to 1939 he taught counterpoint at the Royal Conservatory in Ghent .

Ryelandt was commissioned to write a Te Deum for the 100th anniversary of Belgian independence. In 1937 he became a member of the Royal Belgian Academy. In 1909 Joseph Ryelandt and his three brothers were accepted into the hereditary nobility. In 1938 he received the title of baron, which can be transferred to the firstborn . In 1943 he was deposed by the German occupation forces and was able to resume work in autumn 1944. He retired in 1945.

Works

Ryelandt left 133 works with opus numbers. His compositions are described as late romantic or impressionistic.

Religious vocal music

Ryelandt's reputation during his lifetime was based on his five great oratorios:

  • Purgatorium op. 39 (1904), oratorio in Latin psalms for soprano, choir and orchestra
  • De komst des Heren op. 45 (1906), Advent oratorio in three parts for solos, choir and orchestra
  • Maria op. 48 (1909), oratorio for solos, choir and orchestra
  • Agnus Dei op. 56 (1913), oratorio for solos, choir and orchestra based on texts by Jean Delvigne and O. van Rie
  • Christ Rex op. 79 (1922), oratorio for solos, choir and orchestra based on texts by Charles Martens, commissioned composition for Pope Pius XI.

He also composed seven cantatas and a Te Deum , motets , the mystery play La Parabole des Vierges and the musical drama Sainte Cécile . He composed three masses and a requiem :

  • Missa op. 72 (1918) for mixed choir a cappella
  • Missa op. 84 (1925) for four-part choir and organ
  • Missa six vocibus op.111 (1934) for six-part choir a cappella
  • Missa pro defunctis op. 127 (1939) for mixed choir a cappella

Symphonic music

Ryelandt wrote six symphonies , but destroyed the first. He composed three overtures , a symphonic poem Gethsemani , three orchestral preludes and an orchestral suite.

Chamber music

Ryelandt, himself a pianist, wrote numerous works for piano, including 12 sonatas. The piano also plays an essential role in his chamber music, seven violin sonatas, three cello sonatas and one each for horn, oboe, clarinet and viola. He composed two piano quintets and a piano trio.

He composed about 65 art songs on French and Flemish texts.
