Epilepsy Day

The days of epilepsy is held once a year event series for epilepsy and those affected in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

In Germany, Epilepsy Day was held for the first time in 1996 by the Deutsche Epilepsievereinigung eV with the participation of the German Society for Epileptology in cooperation with the epilepsy organizations for professionals and those affected in Heidelberg. The then President of the Bundestag Rita Süssmuth took over the patronage. Since then, an “Epilepsy Day” working group has carried out increased public relations work with changing thematic focuses on October 5th each year.

Germany

In addition to a central event in different locations, there are numerous regional activities by associations, clinics and other institutions or self-help groups around October 5th. In 2016 the anniversary "20 Years of Epilepsy Day" was celebrated in Berlin: in the Charlottenburg Town Hall with around 150 participants. In 2020 the topic will be "Epilepsy - new to the family", the central event is expected to take place in Marburg. Further information events are organized regionally. In Switzerland, the Swiss Epilepsy League has been holding annual events on Epilepsy Day since 2002, based on the WHO campaign Out of the Shadows .

Austria

In Austria, the Epilepsy Interest Group Austria has held a corresponding event on the first Saturday in October since 2005.
